Featuring You!

by satinwoods on Oct.07, 2011, under Previous Plus Size Blog Posts

Fall is here and I’m loving it! I wait patiently all year long for the breezy weather and the cool air flowing through the windows at the house.  The foliage is changing and what is normally a mundane trip into London, Ontario for random errands, turns into a scenic drive.  Some think I’m nuts as fall preceeds winter but I just try and push those white sentiments aside! :) Mind you, the weather is repeating itself from this time last year on the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend. I was down in Port Stanley, with my toes in the water because it was so balmy. Definitely not a traditional way to spend Thanksgiving when we stereotypically picture the cool weather, sweaters, cute boots and layering at this time of year :)

There is so much on the go right on with our business.  We are planning for the remainder of the year and into next year as we scope out new and stylish plus size tops, tunics and various colourful fashions for our fabulous customers, keeping things fresh for both our online and boutique storefront just south of London, Ontario.

Currently, we are in the midst of creating a page entitled, ‘Featuring You’, showcasing our customers in the items they have purchased from us. Women are always open to seeing our collection on a variety of body shapes and we definitely want to deliver this. If you submit your photo and it is used by Satin Woods Plus Size Clothing Boutique, we will gift you with $15 in store credit.

Feel free to email us at satinwoods@rogers.com with any questions.

Join us on Facebook and have your say in random surveys and be entered into draws. Your input is always valued!

Happy Anniversary

by satinwoods on Aug.27, 2011, under Previous Plus Size Blog Posts

I remember sitting with my business partner a year ago this month. The vision I had for the online store’s design had finally been created in its stunning gold and purple royal tones, our exclusive loyalty program was implemented and our collection of designer plus size fashions was ready to make its debut.

After endless hours of research, countless conversations with women about what they desire in a plus size clothing store in the region of South Western Ontario, the power switch was virtually flicked on. Satin Woods Boutique for the fashion-conscious woman donning sizes 12 and up, made its entrance onto the world wide web.

Plus size tunics, lacey tops, plus size maxi skirts and dresses, jeans, capris and Canadian made custom jewellery have flown out our doors and into the hands of customers here in Canada and as far as Finland. The responses have been heartwarming and the thanks received from customers who noted the personalized touches that go into every one of our shipments has been uplifting.

Being a plus size woman myself and struggling in the stores over the years to find fashionable pieces from around the age of 12, shed light too many times on the serious lack of style options available and the industry’s lack of acceptance of the curvy physique.

I was tired of the looks when I’d go into the stores with my girlfriends and of sifting through a couple of racks in the back of the department while other ladies had the run of the place.

This was something I wanted to see change. It had to.

At Satin Woods Clothing Boutique in Ontario, Canada, we are pleased to stand out in the crowd with our extensive size range fitting up to a 7x in certain styles, personalized care and competitive pricing for quality made plus size garments. Thinking back to day one of operating the online shop, our first call was from a lady asking to come and try some items on. That was a great sign of things to come! We received many more requests of the same nature from ladies eager to try on our unique and chic plus size fashions. The decision to open a storefront was a big one but an obvious one and we opened our doors in March of 2011 in the picturesque waterfront village of Port Stanley, Ontario.

Enter year two.

A year I trust will be one of discovery in creating my own looks by mixing and matching old treasures with new finds, of experimenting with style and of embracing the things in life that make me and my family happy.

Join me!

Just a number

by satinwoods on May.01, 2011, under Previous Plus Size Blog Posts

A young lady in her 20′s came into our storefront in Port Stanley located in SouthWestern Ontario and brought along a friend. This lady left a lasting impression and that time spent assisting her and that of another determined soul in the past month are the inspiration for this blog post.

The young gal perused the racks and spotted our Maui Sunrise Tunic. It can be worn 6 different ways and is super cute and versatile. The bright tie-dye hues tend to stop a lot of browsers as they walk past it.

She picked it off the rack and chimed about how much she liked it. She stood in front of one of our gold full-length mirrors and tried it on. Her friend, in amusement and surprise asked her what size the tunic was. She replied back that the size was ‘irrelevant’. It turned out that the young lady was a size 0 and the tunic was a size 14/16 but she loved it so much that she was determined to make it work. She wasn’t bothered that she was in a ‘plus size clothing’ store and was only focused on rocking her own individual style.

The number on the tag wasn’t an issue to this determined woman and looking great was of the essence.

On another occasion, we assisted a gracious woman who had impeccable and very current taste. She was chatting with myself and my partner about making the most out of life, counting our blessings for all that we have and openly chatting about people she knows that help her out from day to day. She then chimed in while trying on a plethora of pieces that she was in her 70′s. I was absolutely floored as her beautiful spirit had quite noticeably taken years off of her face. She finished off her shopping with a handful of new plus size tops, blouses and cardigans. Like the younger gal from earlier, she also didn’t care about the number on the label. She wasn’t afraid to go up a size or a down a size if that meant a more comfortable and flattering fit. She wasn’t obsessed with what size she was sporting and worked what looked good on her.

The moral of the story is that the number on the label is just a number. Several of our designers offer their own unique fits and cuts and we always encourage people to try the product on (or reference the size charts if purchasing online) and not let a number ruin the shopping experience. We have tops that are cut 2 sizes larger than some expect and other tops that offer a sexy, fitted look and require going up a size depending on one’s preference for fit.  That label should not dictate how we feel about ourselves.

Both of these women, both opposite in age and stature, were both on a positive path through life with their outlook that said they deserve to look and feel gorgeous while having fun with fashion.

A saying I once heard that I think sums up the mood conveyed here is:
‘Be happy for this moment, for this moment is your life.’

Eat, drink eggnog and be Merry!

by satinwoods on Dec.25, 2010, under Previous Plus Size Blog Posts

I’m sitting here in my dimly lit living room on December 24th. Considered to be the most ‘magical’ night of the year for so many families. My Christmas tree has a plethora of ornaments adorning it, some placed on it by me, some by my best friend and some by his son who got to decorate the side facing the window, so all the passers by could see ‘his work’. (Eight year olds love that stuff!) :)

I feel humbled and honoured to be able to celebrate this time of the year with my family and friends and to have a home and a festive tree to enjoy. I know so many people across the globe are suffering hard times and can’t enjoy these things and I try and remember to regularly acknowledge within myself what I have and to never take for granted even the ‘small’ things, which, in honesty, are big to me.

The radio is on in the background. Holiday tunes are on almost all of the radio stations and it takes me back to my youth and to the carefree holiday moments of adolescence when I hear those songs. Nothing makes me happier than singing along with the radio during this time of year and seeing my best friends son laugh at me until his face turns red, as I make up my own silly words to the familiar pieces like, ‘Jingle Bells’ and dance down the hall. Those are some of the precious and ‘small’ moments that for me, make this season what it should be.

I feel that often times we are too quick to focus on the pressures and the negativities and the commercialization of it, instead of taking a moment to find peace in something simple.  We’ve all been there, in *those* moments, fretting because the wrapping isn’t done yet, planning a way to avoid the cousin who’s arriving from out of town that we’d rather not deal with or whining because hubby left the empty eggnog carton in the fridge without announcing that he’d finished it.

Friends, crank the radio, sing those tunes, laugh and be silly! Embrace your family and friends during these last days of 2010. My hope is that we will all walk out of 2010 remembering the good times and learning from our experiences of the past year.
Wishing you and yours the best from Shannon & Jeff at Satin Woods Boutique.

“Maybe this year, Christmas will mean something more…” playing in the background.

Versatile Holiday Wear

by satinwoods on Nov.28, 2010, under Previous Plus Size Blog Posts

I’m looking forward to decorating for the holidays and have been seeing the decorations slowly adorning house fronts in the neighbourhoods around town lately. The smell of wood-burning fireplaces fills the Ontario night air and gets me in the festive spirit. We are looking forward to sharing that spirit with our patrons this season and are looking forward to presenting our upcoming Holiday Collection. We are also offering free standard ground shipping within Canada through to December 24th on orders over $100 Canadian, as our gift to you this season.

We have purchased some gorgeous kimono tops, plus size cocktail dresses and sexy plus size lacy frocks, giving you something for all casual and dressier holiday affairs. I think we have all experienced the times of opening our closets and staring at great items that we’ve only worn once, wishing we had of got more wear out of them. We want to ensure that when you invest in a new treat for your wardrobe that it is something you can wear again and again, so we ensured that the pieces from our Holiday Collection are versatile to keep going into the new year for many occassions.

Cheers!

Proverbial waters

by satinwoods on Oct.14, 2010, under Previous Plus Size Blog Posts

My favourite time of the year is the fall. I anxiously await the months of September, October and November all year. I simply adore the colourful foliage, the crisp and cool days and the nights when sleeping temperatures are perfect.

The Canadian Thanksgiving was this past weekend and I decided to blow the typical Thanksgiving affairs into the water and I headed to the beach. The temperatures were rather favourable, sitting around 20 degrees celcius. A friend texted me to ask if I was enjoying turkey and I responded back that I was enjoying a burger before I dipped my toes into the waters of lake Erie. My friend that accompanied me that day, was a bit surprised at my boldness as I hiked my long skirt up and happily walked into the refreshing water up to my ankles. It was a surprisingly beautiful evening as the sun began to set. There were a handful of professional photographers taking pictures of the sunset. I snapped my own photos and I’ve posted them below for your viewing pleasure.

I decided to share of my weekend outing here in beautiful Ontario, Canada, on Satin Woods’ plus size blog because I want to encourage thinking outside the box and letting loose from time to time. I took an evening and did something that put a smile on my face instead of ‘going with the flow’, simply because that’s what’s expected. I think my enthusiasm was contagious as I caught the kind smiles of a few people and a couple stopped to chat, asking how the water felt.

Dip your toes into the proverbial waters this fall and work your own style. Try something new from Satin Woods collection of designer plus size fashions or piece together an outfit using old and new garments to make you feel unique and refreshed, regardless of what the magazines and trend reports are suggesting would look good. You know what works best for you and that is essentially what matters.

Spreading my wings

by satinwoods on Sep.21, 2010, under Previous Plus Size Blog Posts

Heading out to go browsing recently at some shops in London, Ontario, I sported one of my favourite plus size tops, the Abby Twist Top in Purple with a gold broach, a pair of black capris and a black open-toed heel. I was feeling stellar in my polished ensemble. What a great feeling it is to piece together just the right look!

While I was out with my friend, I casually caught a glimpse of my reflection in a mirror and noticed my elbow fat below the sleeve of my top. However, my reaction was different that time. I just smiled within and kept on walking. I didn’t awkwardly tug at my shirt hoping it would magically grow another inch and a half to cover the most-annoying wing-span of arm fat, but instead, knew I looked great and went with it! I’ve been thinking about what caused me to just ‘let go’ of that vice with my large upper arms and my thoughts took me through a mini-journey, reminiscent of those ‘life flashing before your eyes’ scenes. Here’s a tidbit from that.

As a plus size woman, I now believe that confidence naturally exudes a sense of appeal. As a plus size child and teenager, the looks I received were those of, ‘Oh, there goes the fat girl’. The commentary was never in short supply either. For so many years, a part of me was expecting the fat cracks or the inappropriate stares when out with my slender girlfriends.

I became accustomed to that but was so very fortunate to never accept that as the all-defining truth as to who I was. It’s very easy to lose focus of who we are when the peanut gallery around us always has to have the last word on how we should look, dress or act.

With years gone by and the natural maturing process that we go through, the peanut gallery has now meandered off. I am no longer veered at as a fat woman, but simply, a woman. Confidence in your intelligence, wit, sense of fashion, singing abilities, that weird thing you can do with your right pinky finger or whatever it is that makes you original, will speak volumes to those around you, without having to say a word. I believe, for myself, that the grasp of that simple truth over the years contributed to that moment of ‘letting go’ at the mall, finally.

With the opening of Satin Woods Plus Size Clothing Boutique in Canada, we have been asked what we are passionate about. In addition to an obvious love for affordable, designer plus size fashions, one of the most impacting life belongings that I hold within and that I’ve touched on in this blog entry is that of selfworth. Selfworth is something that no one can take from us and that no scale can dictate to us either, no matter where that dial lands.

As we approach fall here in Ontario, Canada and turn a new page with the change of seasons, my hope is that everyone will find something about themselves that they love, be it internal or external and to focus on that positive. Play with some new colours in your makeup bag, pick up a sexy plus size skirt to sport out with the girls or simply give yourself some ‘me time’ by reading a book with a cup of tea. These small things that often go missed with the busy, multi-tasking ways of us gals, can make a big difference in refreshing us and in our overall daily lives.

:)

Satin Woods Plus Size Clothing Boutique based in Ontario, Canada was launched in the summer of 2010 as an online shopping retreat for curvy women, offering a true boutique experience. We do not buy quantities in vast bulk, offering you ontrend, timeless and sexy plus size fashions as part of our limited collections. We are providing today’s discerning woman with an online store that is far from ordinary. Say good bye to frumpy, boxy outfits, and ‘old-lady’ patterns and welcome sexy and sophisticated plus size dresses that will work with your individual shape. Forget about unflattering “Mom” jeans – instead, slip into a pair of versatile, bootcut jeans. Step out in style with a new frock from our closet to yours without busting your coin purse
