From Our Closet To Yours

Colour Your World

They say variety is the spice of life. Having the store, I’ve found out just how true that old saying is.

In this blog, I’m going to share on some of the fabulous buying trends we’ve noted here at the shop in St. Thomas, Ontario.

Growing up as a full figured woman in Ontario Canada, I observed that the plus size woman generally didn’t lean toward vibrant prints and funkier picks for their wardrobes. Solids and more classic pieces were the ‘go-to’ items that we stereotypically were expected to don.

I’ve always done my own thing when it came to style. Even as far back as public school, I was recognized for my love of colour.  I remember my favourite top was a colourful plus size tunic. It was longer in length and I wore it with tights. It had a plethora of psychedelic colours on it and my girlfriends loved it.

Perhaps it was foreshadowing of things to come…

I had a conversation recently with a lovely lady who had her own shop as well. She said that her full figured customers preferred solids and dresses with no patterns. We had an interesting chitchat about the trends we’ve witnessed with each of our respective clients.

Her eyebrow raised when I chimed in that we’ve noticed the opposite with many ladies.

There is nothing wrong with solids and basics as they are essential to mix and matching to create a smart ensemble.  No closet is complete without the perfect pair of black dress pants and a layering piece like a white blouse or a plus size cardigan. I think the majority of us would agree that we don’t want to look like a flashing billboard in Times Square in New York City and that moderation is usually a good thing.

Neutrals are essential for polished pairing

Enter Satin Woods Boutique for the plus size woman worldwide. I follow my instincts when it comes to purchasing our plus size collections and accessories. The majority of items lining the racks here at the shop are items that I would wear. Not all suit my particular body shape but they are all unique and versatile and a lot of them are transitional pieces that can be dressed up or down.

Some of our most daring pieces which have been vintage inspired have done the best. They offered a touch of renaissance style for the plus size woman while still being sexy

Those vintage pieces, our brightest prints and funkiest cuts always fly off the shelves first when we get them in.

That just blows the stereotype of plus size style equalling that of paint drying on a wall right out of the water.

With the cold months in South Western Ontario having arrived and a smattering of snow on the ground in my backyard, I know that the colours of spring traditionally die out in the retail shops. On Facebook, we have promised our patrons to keep the beloved colourful tunics, tops and dresses coming.

Here is one of our favourite items for fall.  More from this designer is on the way in December.
