Eat, drink eggnog and be Merry!

I’m sitting here in my dimly lit living room on December 24th. Considered to be the most ‘magical’ night of the year for so many families. My Christmas tree has a plethora of ornaments adorning it, some placed on it by me, some by my best friend and some by his son who got to decorate the side facing the window, so all the passers by could see ‘his work’. (Eight year olds love that stuff!)
I feel humbled and honoured to be able to celebrate this time of the year with my family and friends and to have a home and a festive tree to enjoy. I know so many people across the globe are suffering hard times and can’t enjoy these things and I try and remember to regularly acknowledge within myself what I have and to never take for granted even the ‘small’ things, which, in honesty, are big to me.
The radio is on in the background. Holiday tunes are on almost all of the radio stations and it takes me back to my youth and to the carefree holiday moments of adolescence when I hear those songs. Nothing makes me happier than singing along with the radio during this time of year and seeing my best friends son laugh at me until his face turns red, as I make up my own silly words to the familiar pieces like, ‘Jingle Bells’ and dance down the hall. Those are some of the precious and ‘small’ moments that for me, make this season what it should be.
I feel that often times we are too quick to focus on the pressures and the negativities and the commercialization of it, instead of taking a moment to find peace in something simple. We’ve all been there, in *those* moments, fretting because the wrapping isn’t done yet, planning a way to avoid the cousin who’s arriving from out of town that we’d rather not deal with or whining because hubby left the empty eggnog carton in the fridge without announcing that he’d finished it.
Friends, crank the radio, sing those tunes, laugh and be silly! Embrace your family and friends during these last days of 2010. My hope is that we will all walk out of 2010 remembering the good times and learning from our experiences of the past year.
Wishing you and yours the best from Shannon & Jeff at Satin Woods Boutique.
“Maybe this year, Christmas will mean something more…” playing in the background.
